Hospice and Hospice Care

Varachai Thongthai1
Abstract

Although hospice was created less than half a century ago, the first hospice in Thailand is only two decades old. It is not popular in Thai society due to the fundamental differences in perspectives on death, family, want, happiness, and suffering as well as value and lifestyle. Moreover, the acceptance of foreign knowledge and culture without reservation is a cause of crisis in Thai society. Hence, the hospice and hospice care should be studied first in order to find suitable model for Thai society.

Last year, Mahidol University announced the establishment of the Center for Integrated Elderly Health and Hospice Care, and the study of hospice and hospice care is one of its objectives. This is very timely because the hospice in Thailand is still in early stage. Therefore, it can be adjusted to the needs of the society, not for the society to adjust to the service availability. A great concern is that the services provided by the hospice should be only for benefit and happiness of people and society at large, not for profit of a few.
